It’s a question we get all the time.
It occurred to me that small business owners might not know the difference between a tax accountant, a bookkeeper and a management accountant.

TAX ACCOUNTANT
This is the person you see virtually or in person at least once a year to assist with your tax return.
Tax accountants can also be your registered ASIC agent, set-up or change your business structure, do your IAS / BAS and help you with tax planning.
BOOKKEEPER
A bookkeeper is there with you every week of the year, getting deep into the transaction level detail of your business.
They record your business transactions in the general ledger, process your payroll and superannuation, send invoices, make payments, reconcile your bank account and run regular Profit and Loss reports to let you know how your business is performing.
If they’re a registered BAS Agent, they can also submit your IAS / BAS and assist with payroll and Single Touch Payroll lodgements.
MANAGEMENT ACCOUNTANT
Per Investopedia, management accountants “analyse basic financial data and make forecasts, budgets, performance measurements and plans, then present them to management to assist in its operational decision making.”
Not many small businesses have a management accountant but large corporations are full of them.
